A Community-Led Effort to Improve Healthcare Literacy
Today’s healthcare system is complex and can be hard for patients to use. Many people feel confused and frustrated by hard-to-understand health insurance information.
The Healthcare Literacy Council is addressing this challenge by leading a public education campaign to help people make better use of their healthcare, avoid unnecessary emergency room visits and get the care they need—more affordably and effectively.

Community Classes
The Council’s education program empowers people in Far East Contra Costa County with the information they need to become more confident and informed healthcare consumers. The Council trains local college students as ambassadors to deliver healthcare literacy classes to older adults, high schoolers and other community groups across Far East Contra Costa County. Ambassadors will begin outreach in January 2026.
Healthcare Literacy Ambassadors
Healthcare Literacy Ambassadors are a vital component of the program, serving as trusted messengers who share healthcare literacy tools and information with their community. By helping others better understand how to use their healthcare, ambassadors promote informed decision-making and support healthier communities.
